I used to think that learning sign language was way out of my league. Watching people that do sign are amazing. Just not for my pea-sized brain! However, when I sat down with my 2 year old to watch a complimentary instructional video from Signing Families, I quickly changed my mind!
Louise Sattler is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist with specializations in linguistics and multi-cultural education. She has been teaching American Sign Language for more than 20 years to families with hearing and non-hearing children, college students, staff at public and private school systems and businesses. Along with a 35 minute DVD, a bookmark with a few signs printed on it and a small pricing guide, I received a hand written note from Louise, thanking me for my interest in reviewing her product. I’m appreciative of her for not thinking of me as just another number!
Bracing for the worst, I was very thrilled to find out that I really can learn to sign! Louise makes it so simple; I’m saddened that I didn’t start learning much earlier. She is an excellent instructor. I did not feel talked down to the way some teachers like to make you feel 5 years old! She was easy to understand with simple words to start with. Her enthusiasm for signing is apparent in her explanations of hand movements and words.
The concept of the DVD is for parents to learn it first and teach their children later. Well, I did sit RB down with me and guess who was more excited to start signing? He quickly started to use his hands along with what Louise was doing. I am happy to say that one of the first words RB remembered was “chicken” which was one of his very first big kid words he started to speak.
Please visit Louise’s website, Signing Families, where you can purchase her products and get more information on the classes she offers. There is a ton of information here from general parenting help to help with children who have learning problems. If you have ever thought of teaching your children sign language or need to boost their speech and learning development, Signing Families is a great place to start and end your search. I encourage all parents to work with Louise as your teacher. I look forward to mastering her first DVD and expanding my little one’s skills. Many thanks to Mommy Perks for featuring Signing Families; I never would have thought I could do this!
